Slaves in America, Slaves in America, is that long enough for you YA?
many moons ago I went on a field trip to a museum type village in Detroit, where they have reconstructed life and cabins etc' daily life for americans from its founding up through the end of slavery, the place is called greenfield village, anyway i took a picture of a reconstructed slave house that was brought there from Georgia, the plaque by the door reads as follows: Hermitage Slave House "a single family lived in the building in 1850. The family supplemented the meager food rations provded by the plantation owner by planting a garden behind the house; they also hunted game and caught fish in the savannah river." so my question is, WTF, slaves got guns and were allowed to leave the premise and going fishing and hunting?! this seems a little contradictory to what i was taught in school, now im not advocating slavery was a walk in the park, but were they allowed more freedoms than what is believed or what is going on here
