Are potential candidates afraid to run for president?

Because they know that the media will do everything they can to bring up every embarring and unrelated (to politics) flaw in your entire life, then attack everyone in your immediate family, and do everything possible to completely ruin your reputation, going to such lengths that they would make up blatant lies about you that a good portion of the public would believe ( take Obama's birth certificate for example )
